Become a Councillor

Please consider joining the Parish Council

Please think about coming on the Council to help the village. We now have 5 vacancies on the Council. If Councillor numbers drop much further, the Borough Council have a duty to take control and bring in outsiders to sit on our Council. We want our village to be run by villagers!

  • If you are passionate about the village
  • If you want to make a difference to village life

Then why not speak up on behalf of others, to improve our village, amenities, recreation facilities and general quality of life in the village.

What’s Involved

Councillors have a monthly meeting to make decisions about the village and it’s facilities. We manage some of the services in the village (see About Us) and we make plans (both short & long term) for improvements to the village generally. We have a say in planning and development and we work to represent the villager’s views to the Borough and County Councils and to the Police Commissioner. We also work with Norfolk County Council about Highways issues and issues affecting public rights of way. We liaise with the Borough about the services they provide in the village.

As a councillor, you would attend meetings once a month and have some a little reading to do sent by the clerk about issues on the agenda for discussion.  This would usually involve looking at the agenda for the meeting, some finance information about the Council’s spending and there are usually some planning applications to consider. At some meetings their might be other letters or reports about certain issues or projects within the village.

We also have a monthly working meeting (outside of the formal meetings) to brain storm and discuss ideas in a less formal way.

You would speak to residents when needed to obtain their views. You can put in as much additional time as you like, if you want to get involved with particular projects to get things done.  Some councillors are very ‘hands on‘, but it is not a requirement.

No special qualification is required to be a councillor.  Training for new councillors is provided to help you understand the role and responsibilities.

Councillors are not employees of the Council and do not get paid. They give up their time voluntarily, out of their commitment to the village. Our Councillors do not take expenses.

We are are seeking to fill the majority of the vacancies by ‘co-option’, which means there is no requirement for a full formal election process. If you think you would like to join the Parish Council or would like to know more, please get in touch with our Clerk. She is happy to talk to you about the role and what is involved. You are also very welcome to come along to any Parish Council meeting and speak to our Councillors.
